Multiecuscan - Security Gateway

FIAT Group Security Gateway

What is a Security Gateway?

Many FIAT group (FCA) vehicles (FIAT, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Chrysler, Jeep etc.) from the 2018 model year onwards (sold from mid-2017) are fitted with a Security Gateway (SGW) module.
This sits between the diagnostic socket and the rest of the diagnostic system, and prevents everything except read-only access to the car, unless the tool can supply a session-specific security code from FIAT's servers.
It even prevents clearing of fault codes.

Low-cost aftermarket tools such as MultiECUScan and FiCOM do not have access to those servers, and so can only access read-only data on vehicles fitted with an SGW.

Is there anything I can do?

That depends on the type of SGW your vehicle has.

On the first generation SGW, you can actually physically bypass the module with specially designed bypass cables.
You essentially unplug the SGW completely from the vehicle, and plug in a bypass adaptor in its place.
This could be considered a 'modification', so it's recommended that you remove bypass adaptors before visiting a Fiat dealership.

However, Fiat soon realised how easily people were bypassing the system which they claimed was implemented in the name of 'Security', so a second generation SGW has now been introduced.
The 2nd gen Gateway is integrated into the vehicle's Body Control Module, so simply unplugging it like the 1st gen units would also remove the BCM, so the car car would not work at all.
Theoretically it may be possible to bypass SGW functions on a 2nd gen unit by tapping directly into the vehicle's CAN communication line, but it cannot be done with a simple bypass adaptor any more.

How do I know if my car has an SGW?

If you have bought an enthusiast (non-multiplex) MultiECUScan package for a 2017 or newer model, do NOT activate the software license immediately (as once activated it cannot be refunded).

Please follow the rest of the setup instructions supplied with your package, then plug into the vehicle (with the OBDLink interface directly into the car - do not use any of the coloured adaptors), and run the 'Scan' function in the software.
If your vehicle has an SGW module it will be reported on the list.
If so, please do not activate the software, and contact us.

Which models are known to be affected?

The following models have all been seen to be fitted with an SGW.
This list is not exhaustive though; other models may also be affected:
  • Alfa Romeo Giulia (2017-on)
  • Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-on)
  • Dodge RAM (2018-on)
  • FIAT 500L (2017-on)
  • FIAT 500X (2017-on)
  • FIAT Doblo (2017-on)
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee (2018-on)
  • Jeep Renegade (2017-on)
Any new / updated / face-lifted FCA model from 2018 onwards is likely to have an SGW fitted.

The second generation SGW (which cannot practically be bypassed) is known to have been fitted to:
  • Fiat 500e (2020-on)
  • Fiat Ducato x290 MCA (approx. 2022-on)
